The bad thing about the Official Social Security List is that they don’t combine spellings of popular name. Spelling counts.  There are sometimes big changes when you add up spellings.  These are all the names in The Top 1000.  Rankings could change if you added up all the names on the list.

No longer in The Top 100 for girls are Julia, Taylor, Gianna, Willow, Clara, and Faith.

New to the Top 100 for girls are Lyla, Liliana, Isabelle, Charlie, Jasmine, London, Callie, Makayla, Bailey, Amaya, and Annabelle.

DID YOUR FAVORITES GO UP OR DOWN WHEN YOU COMBINE SPELLING?

*Note:  There could be slight or different pronunciations to some names like Adeline/Adalynn, but I do think this is more accurate then the Official List.

  1. Elizabeth says:

I’m really surprised (and thrilled) to see that Adeline is so pervasive!

It would be great if the SSA had a second list to combine spellings, but if there’s only one list of official spellings I’d prefer they be separate. Otherwise some names might appear as duplicates (i.e., is Miya a variant of Mia or Maya/Maia?). Then you have similarly-pronounced names like Aria and Arya that have different origins, meanings, and even pop culture backgrounds. I’m sure SSA has its reasons for publishing the lists the way it does.

Agreed. I would want both too. I just think a combined spelling list is a better way to gauge true popularity as a companion to the Official list.

  2. Amy3 says:

I like seeing this list in contrast to the official SSA list. You get a good sense of ‘heard’ popularity.
