Confession. I like unusual names. What? You already knew that. Okay, maybe it’s obvious or maybe I’ve told you before. 🙂 That being said, I don’t love all of them, of course. We all have our own opinions, perceptions, and thoughts and that’s true about popular names too. For instance, I can’t stand the name Lucas. (No offense intended if your name or your child’s name is Lucas.)
Do you remember that show Mad about You with Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt? On the show, they named their baby Mabel. When they announced the name, their families reacted with stone cold silence. The families of these babies probably had the same reaction or worse. But I bet over time, the names will grow on them and then they couldn’t imagine these kids with any other names. Like any? Hate any?

Any names you know in real life that you disliked at first, but now you like?
My 11 year old is named Crimson and when I would tell my friends/family that I was planning to name her that, I would get that silence usually followed by one of the following:
“That sounds like a streetwalker” “Will you get her pole dancing lessons?” “That makes me think of blood” and my favorite “I’m pretty sure there is a porn star with that name”
After I had her, I’ve met 4 other girls with the name (one whose father dragged his mother over to meet my Crimson just to prove to her that it is a real name that other children have!). The funniest part though is that not only does she love her name, she gets complemented on it constantly! She’s the only one that does. My other kids (Kellie, Rejeanne and Cyrus) never get “Oh, what a beautiful name!”
Maybe folks are just trying to make her feel better since her mom gave her a name only a hooker could love? Hard sayin’ 🙂
Even though people always say, “Oh they’ll get hell at school”, the truth is children actually love beautiful and unusual names and so do most adults.
Crimson is lovely, and as Scarlett is a standard name, why not Crimson?
PS There are porn stars with my name as well, and mine is dead common. Any name can be a porn star name!
Ha! Maybe silence isn’t such a bad thing after all. I love the name Crimson. Very cool. Thanks for sharing the reactions you got. 🙂
I love a whole stack of these names – I think it’s great when parents are gutsy enough to pick something really different and can stand up to the stares and comments.
My faves are Domino Violet, Electra Pearl and Honey Elizabeth for girls, and for boys Ajax Vincent, Tanis Jack and Wolf Sampson.
Ajax and Madrid are pretty cool. As is Loxley, Cassiopeia and Electra.
However, Jock, Halo, Domino, Honey, Stellar, Santa, Wolf, Cherry, are way too literal for me.
Madwick and Jag are just odd.
I love Loxley. I’d probably spell it Locksley but still a great name. Stellar Coco sounds like something you’d order at Starbucks, I wouldn’t want to get on Wolf Sampson’s bad side and Madwick is pretty cool but I would probably put it in the middle.
I love Loxley too. It reminds me of Robin Hood. (He’s Robin of Loxley).
I do know a girl named Lockley, which I love, but no Loxleys yet.
Primrose… So lovely and perfect.
I love Domino Violet… very cool. I saw a birth announcement a while ago for a little boy called Domino Royal, also pretty cool. But I love Violet in the middle. Electra Pearl, Honey Elizabeth, Pixie Rose are also gorgeous and Wolf Sampson is great!
Domino makes for a cool boy name too.
Oh, and names that have grown on me are mostly old-fashioned names. I used to like names like India and Sierra and Emerson, now my favourites are more along the lines of Florence, Esther, Clementine, Valerie…
🙂 It’s interesting to see how our taste changes. Clementine is one of my favorites too.
