CHARLI & CHARLIE (unisex names)

If you visit baby name message boards, one of the things that seems to ruffle feathers is using boy names on girls.   Some people love it, some people hate it.  Passionately.    Another thing I’ve noticed is when using a boyish name, parents will sometimes change the spelling to “girl it up”.

Examples  of this are the  -yn ending changing Emerson to Emersyn, which also get rid of the pesky S-O-N (which means son of) or adding the - leigh spelling changing Marley to Marleigh.

I found birth announcements for a boy and a girl, both Peyton Avery,  and a Presley Blake (boy) and a Preslee Blake (girl).   It just goes to show that we all have individual tastes and that makes things interesting when it comes to baby names.

The boy names are listed first because sometimes it’s hard to tell.

I hate boy names on girls. Changing the spelling doesn’t make it more feminine, since there are male Jordyn’s, Leigh’s, Justyn’s, Camryn’s, Jaedyn’s, etc… I’m fine with different spellings, but changing the spelling of a name doesn’t make it girly, if its Cameron or Camryn, both are boy names.
However certain names have female spellings. Danielle is female of Daniel. You then have Vivienne, female of Vivian (which is why I never understood why girls had to steal the male version of this name).

another example is UK X-Factor winner Shayne Ward. Now is Shayne female? Of course not.

  4. Andre says:

On another note, will changing the spelling of Elisabeth to Elyzabeth make it masculine? Or Jessica to Jessyka? Of course not. Which is why female Devyn’s or Ryleigh’s will always have male names.

I diagree with Andre. Those arent male names, theyre unisex.
I agree changing a spelling doesnt make it different or more femine BUT it can help in dividing boys and girl. EG if most Emersyns are female, it doesnt make it more feminine but it helpd iykwim.
